The captivating eyes of my diva, Annie Lennox

Annie Lennox

Annie Lennox has always been my ultimate music crush! It’s not just her incredible voice, but her eyes are just captivating. I wasn’t really into Eurythmics back then, but when I rediscovered her solo stuff, I was hooked! Been a huge fan ever since.

Back in the ’90s, I saw the music video for ‘Why?‘ and was instantly drawn to her eyes. I was captivated by her gaze as I listened to the song, which felt like she was singing it just for me. It was on a Music 21 special, and I had a whole hour to fall in love with my diva.

It’s a sad song about the disappointment of a relationship, and it’s full of those “why?” moments. I was really struck by the lyrics, especially the way she hits those high notes with so much power. She doesn’t have the same look or physical attributes as other “divas,” but maybe that’s what I liked about her.

They were, and kind of still are even though they rarely perform together, a huge deal in the ’80s Synthpop scene.”

Eurythmics.

So, Annie Lennox became my jam after I heard her solo stuff and all the hits she did with her partner David Stewart back in the day. Maybe Eurythmics doesn’t ring a bell, but if you’ve ever heard ‘Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This),’ then BAM! Major throwback. They were, and kind of still are even though they rarely perform together, a huge deal in the ’80s Synthpop scene.

As for their music, it’s all killer, no filler. Think catchy tunes like ‘It’s Alright (Baby’s Coming Back)’ and ‘There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart).’ Plus some deeper stuff like ‘Love Is A Stranger‘, You Have Placed A chill In My Heart, and ‘Here Comes The Rain Again.’ Her latest album even has some gems – check out ‘I Save The World Today’ and ‘17 Again‘ if you haven’t already.

In the early ’90s, Annie Lennox started working on her debut album, simply called ‘Diva’.”

The Beginning

Back in the late ’70s, Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart met when they were both in the band The Tourists. They dated for a while, but after they broke up, they stayed working together and found worldwide success with Eurythmics. After an award-winning career and with little left to prove, the duo split up to pursue solo careers.

In the early ’90s, Annie Lennox started working on her debut album, simply called “Diva“. The first single from the album was ‘Why?’, and the video for that song features the look that captivated me forever. The album was very successful in Europe, with a strong presence on the airplay charts as well as in the US and Australia.

It took eight years, including a Eurythmics reunion, for her to release “Bare”, her third solo album.”

Albums

Three years later, she released “Medusa“, an album of covers done in her own unique style. That’s when she completely won me over. It took eight years, including a Eurythmics reunion, for her to release “Bare“, her third solo album. She released her subsequent albums every three to four years until 2015, when she stopped releasing albums altogether.

Her first three albums contain most of the songs she regularly performs in her concerts, along with Eurythmics’ songs. That doesn’t mean there aren’t some of my favorites on ‘Songs of Mass Destruction‘ and ‘Nostalgia‘. She also has an album called “A Christmas Cornucopia“, which, as the name suggests, only contains traditional Christmas songs.

On another note, in 2014, Lennox won the Oscar for Best Original Song for ‘Into the West’.”

Back with Dave

Eurythmics reunited in the late 90s to release their final album to date, “Peace“. It was a mellow album that reflected the duo’s artistic maturity and their journey through international fame. Fittingly, the single ’17 Again’ ends with the chorus of ‘Sweet Dreams’, symbolically closing the loop.

On another note, in 2014, Lennox won the Oscar for Best Original Song for ‘Into the West‘. The song is part of the soundtrack for the movie “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King“. Coincidentally, I’m a big fan of the mythology and stories of J.R.R. Tolkien, the author of the LOTR book.

Annie toured occasionally after that until 2015, but I haven’t heard much from her since then.”

A Reunion and a Look Back

Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart reunited in 2014 to perform The Beatles’ ‘Fool on the Hill‘ on the Grammy tribute show “The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute to The Beatles.” It was their first time performing together as Eurythmics since 2005, when they promoted their last single, ‘I’ve Got a Life‘.

Annie toured occasionally after that until 2015, but I haven’t heard much from her since then. She only has six albums, and as a fan, I always hope she’ll release one more, but I’m okay if she doesn’t. Her songs, her videos, and especially her beautiful eyes are all etched into my memory.

Over the years, she’s become my constant companion, always present in my life’s ups and downs.”

My diva

I have to admit, Annie’s gorgeous eyes first caught my attention. But it was her music that really drew me in and made me a diehard fan. Over the years, she’s become my constant companion, always present in my life’s ups and downs.

Through my highs and lows with Lily, after the disastrous event in Havre. On shopping trips with Kiki, watching her smile. Every argument I had with Chibi. The first time I talked to Betty, so excited. And on my trip to Colombia with Veron.

At every significant moment in my life, her voice and beautiful eyes have been there to console, comfort, and encourage me.”

Her Impact on me

Even during my slow recovery from sciatica, Annie Lennox’s music gave me strength when others turned their backs on me. At every significant moment in my life, her voice and beautiful eyes have been there to console, comfort, and encourage me. There are times when I listen to other types of music, but she’s never far away and always finds a way to come back.

Sure, there have been other songs and artists that have filled the soundtrack of my life, but her music is special to me. I know that when I’m having a bad day or want to relax and unwind, her music will always find its way back to my ears. Even after all these years, her eyes still move me and her gaze still gives me those delicious chills.

She plays the flute and piano like a boss, her songwriting is incredible, and her voice can go from strong and vibrant to sweet and soulful in a heartbeat.”

Finale

And that’s how I became a total fan of this amazing woman! Not only is she a total goddess with a voice that could melt glaciers, but she’s also a fierce activist fighting for HIV/AIDS awareness. She’s worked with UNESCO, Amnesty International, and the Red Cross, and she’s even a member of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). Oh, and did I mention she’s one of the top 100 singers of all time?

Seriously, Annie Lennox is the real deal. She plays the flute and piano like a boss, her songwriting is incredible, and her voice can go from strong and vibrant to sweet and soulful in a heartbeat. After learning about her incredible career and all she’s accomplished, I can only say one thing: she’s my ultimate diva.

Meet you at the next entry.
